The new energy battery industry has become a trillion dollar market

In recent years, the popularity of the lithium battery industry has not decreased. Liu Baosheng, Chairman of the China Battery Industry Association, believes that in recent years, the total main business revenue of battery manufacturing enterprises above designated size in China has reached nearly trillion yuan, and the battery industry has shown an overall growth trend. Among them, lithium batteries have become a new hot spot in global economic development, not only widely used in civilian fields such as electric vehicles, smartphones, household appliances, medical devices, but also in intelligent network platforms, defense and military fields. The main business income accounts for about 80% of the entire battery industry and has become a major product in the battery manufacturing industry.

With the rapid development of the industry and the emergence of international competitive advantages, China's lithium battery industry has also encountered problems. Liu Baosheng stated that in China, the investment enthusiasm in the lithium battery industry is high, and production capacity risks have already emerged, which may exacerbate market competition. Internationally, Western countries have prioritized the development of new energy vehicles and power battery industries, and international competition is becoming increasingly fierce. At the same time, key raw materials for battery manufacturing, including lithium nickel cobalt and other raw materials, still rely on imports, and upstream raw materials are relatively scarce.

As an industry practitioner, Gao Fei, Deputy Director of the Technology Center of Honeycomb Energy Technology Co., Ltd., believes that the overall trend of new energy vehicles is improving. In addition to the passenger car market, the energy storage market began to explode last year, becoming another trillion level market after new energy vehicles.

Li Zhongbing, General Manager of Wuhu Chery Technology Co., Ltd. and Anhui Deyi Energy Technology Co., Ltd., stated that customers have high requirements for battery life and temperature. However, the battery industry chain is very strong, and costs cannot be reduced. The main engine factory is very painful, but there is also a great demand. The goal of entering the field to produce batteries is to reduce battery costs by 20%. Firstly, it is necessary to master technology and vertically integrate the second supply chain.

Regarding the current issue of overcapacity in the new energy battery industry, Xu Ning, Executive Vice President of Huayou New Energy Research Institute, told the Beijing News Shell Finance reporter that the valuation of lithium battery companies is generally high, and the cost of mergers and acquisitions is also high. There are differences in equipment and processes among industry enterprises, and internal enterprises in the industry tend to build their own industry chains. Enterprises entering the lithium battery industry across borders may choose mergers and acquisitions.

Regarding the shortcomings in the development of the power battery industry, Liang Rui, Vice President of Xinwangda Electronics Co., Ltd., also proposed countermeasures. The first is to accelerate the promotion of corporate carbon neutrality, formulate corporate carbon neutrality policies and standards, and support enterprises in applying for certification; Government agencies or industry associations lead the development of standardized carbon reduction technology solutions; Support universities and industry organizations to launch dual carbon related training courses and talent certification. The second is to promote the development of carbon footprint related databases and standards, and to develop carbon footprint databases and carbon accounting software for the Chinese battery industry; Develop authoritative carbon footprint standards for power batteries; Support relevant standards and domestic certification bodies to align with international standards. The third is to create a carbon reduction system for the entire supply chain of power batteries, strengthen carbon footprint certification, and develop systematic low-carbon management solutions for power batteries; Support the construction of a digital platform for carbon reduction in the entire supply chain of power batteries; Increase support for battery recycling and material recycling, and establish a material recycling appraisal and notarization system.
